Title: Exercise as Medicine in Rehabilitation: Improving Function Through Evidence-Based Practice

Abstract

Exercise is one of the most effective and affordable treatments used in rehabilitation. It helps people move better, become stronger, reduce pain, and return to their normal daily activities. Research shows that regular exercise improves recovery for people with muscle and joint problems, stroke, heart and lung diseases, and many other health conditions. However, exercise is not always used in the best way. Some patients receive exercise programmes that do not meet their needs, while others find it difficult to stay active during rehabilitation. This presentation looks at the idea of Exercise as Medicine and explains why exercise should be a key part of rehabilitation. It reviews current research on how exercise improves physical function, independence, and quality of life. It also explains how rehabilitation professionals can safely plan and deliver exercise programmes using the best available evidence. The presentation will discuss the basic principles of exercise prescription, including patient assessment, setting realistic goals, choosing the right type of exercise, and monitoring progress. It will also look at common challenges, such as poor patient motivation, limited resources, and differences in clinical practice. Finally, the presentation will explore new developments in rehabilitation, including tele-rehabilitation, wearable devices, and digital health tools. These technologies are helping more people access rehabilitation services and stay involved in their recovery. The presentation aims to encourage rehabilitation professionals to see exercise not simply as part of treatment, but as a powerful tool that improves function, supports recovery, and promotes long-term health. Participants will leave with practical ideas that can be used in everyday clinical practice to improve patient care.

What will the audience take away from your presentation?

Learn how to plan safe and effective exercise programmes using current evidence. Understand how exercise improves movement, strength, balance, and daily function. Identify common challenges that stop patients from exercising and learn ways to overcome them. Learn how digital health tools and tele-rehabilitation can improve patient care and rehabilitation services. How will this help the audience? The presentation will give healthcare professionals practical ideas they can use in their daily work. It will help them plan better exercise programmes, improve patient recovery, and support long-term health. Researchers and teachers can also use the information to guide future research, teaching, and clinical training.
